About this Demo:
Working from a live model, Joseph will demonstrate his “sepia” portrait process using only Raw Umber oil paint, letting the white of the original canvas shine through for the light areas. Joseph will discuss his painting process as he works, and he will happily answer any questions the attendees may have about painting techniques & materials, portrait commissions, or painting philosophy.
Many aspiring painters struggle to transition from drawing to painting. Working in monochromatic oils offers a versatile bridge between the two, which can help you learn to make your full-color work more solid and structural. This sepia technique can be used either to make beautiful finished paintings OR underpaintings to be worked over later in color. Joseph will discuss both approaches during the course of the demo, which will be interspersed with slide presentations throughout of the day with examples of his own paintings and those of the masters.
While portraiture will be our focus, the techniques and principles covered can be applied to any type of oil painting (landscape, figure, still-life, etc.)
