Over the course of the day, I will cover:
- The initial photoshoot and painted life study
- Mocking up a composition in Photoshop
- Developing the full-sized painting in layers
- The final sitting
- Framing, varnishing, and delivery
- Over the course of the day, Joseph will share his thoughts and strategies on:
- Painting materials and techniques
- Setting up on location and in the studio
- Combining life painting with photographic reference
- Preparing the client/subject … presenting and negotiating your vision for the portrait … handling feedback
- Private family commissions vs. institutional commissions
- The joys and sorrows of posthumous portraits
- Establishing your career, setting your prices, and working with portrait agencies
The day will also include an oil painting demonstration from a live model and a Q&A session with the audience. Attendees will receive a handout with an extensive list of the gear and painting materials that I use for my commissioned portraits.
